Jenny is the frontwoman of Rilo Kiley and has produced two fantastic solo albums: Rabbit Fur Coat and Acid Tongue. I have some show fatigue so this will be shortish. There was some damn parade (Rose festival? Celebration of western European traditional dress? Festival of moderate public intoxication? I am out of the loop) that turned my usual easy parking routine into a 45 minute shitshow.
Jenny came out in bell bottoms and simple purple T. Sang a solo acoustic number before launching into a full band rollicking version of “See Fernando”. 6 band members total. Nice, full sound. Great show. Great energy. Highlights for me: “Jack Killed Mom”, “Rise Up With Fists!!”, “Acid Tongue”, “The Charging Sky”, and a cover of the Traveling Wilburys’ “Handle Me With Care”. The passion and energy of Jack Killed Mom compared to the album is definitely of note.
The stage presence of this band is one of a party. Lots of drinking. And Jenny’s quirky and interesting lyrical style is duplicated in the live setting.
If you dig Jenny, the show delivers. If you haven’t checked out her stuff, it is probably worth it IMO if you dig a little alt.country/throwback rock sound. If you don’t dig her, or that kind of music, stay away. Or, re-target your boundaries and live a little.
