Show Date : May 16th, 2009
Show was at 7:00 and the Doobies must have hit the stage at 6:59 or something. I got there 10 minutes late and could hear “Jesus Is Just Alright” as I grabbed my beers.
I didn’t do any real research on this show. Just went. And I was determined to sit on my ass during the Doobies. I was in the front row. But damn, I got up and shook it for the Doobie Brothers.
Me and the older folks around me. Hilarious fun. To them I was Sammy. Whatever you crazy 50somethings (I find out after the show that they thought I looked like Sammy Hagar). Doobies have 8 musicians on stage and the catalog of songs was pretty amazing…Black Water, Listen To The Music, Taking It To The Streets, China Grove, What a Fool Believes, Jesus Is Just Alight….always incredible the hit factory these older bands are/were.
Allman Brothers Band. This tour is dedicated to Duane Allman and the 40th (!!) year of the band.
Gregg Allman’s cabinet looks like something out of the 1800′s. And he sounds about as lucid as Ozzy Osbourne, but damn. This is a crazy band.
Crazy.
I know the Allmans are often classified a jam band. But they don’t test the limits of your patience and chemical ride with noodling that drifts into the ether. There is a structure and the fills and solos all wrap around the backbone of what they are playing. You dig? Cause I did. So let us call them a blues-rock band. Just for Sammy. Pretty please?
The first song was Statesboro Blues. And that is when I knew I found a new band to love (I know I am like 30 years late, but I don’t give a shit). Gregg’s perfect voice, Warren Haynes’ slide guitar, Derek Trucks with the solo…
The Allman Brothers Band set lists are always up on their site. So won’t get into that. So for the next 2 hours I was treated to a show where the musicians were locked in. I dig newer bands who use passion to compensate for a lack of experience. But shows like this where the musicians know their instruments and each other like the back of their hand is a snack.
Go.
If you already have, go again.
Sammy wants you to.
