Berbati’s Pan. Berbati’s Pan is in the part of town where you can potentially get some anonymous sex, Chinese porn, or dilate or saucer your pupils. It is certainly the place you can get some of the baddest donuts in the land next door…

Berbati’s Pan. I love this dump. Reminds me of the old Fenix Underground for you Seattle types. Only street level. 500-ish person room. Elevated stage with poles on the corners. Without the poles, brilliant. Sound is fine. So, old school type place. Probably paint over the dirt. Then again, who cares? We’re rocking and drinking, not performing delicate surgery.
Show is sold out. As are many on this tour. Uh huh. Weezer mixtape before the show gets people more pump than the three (!!) warm up acts. Gaslight Anthem: short summary. Jersey band. Let’s say they have punk influences. Lead singer/guitarist and bassist holding down the hotness for the ladies. Don’t like comparisons, but everyone is pegging them as Springsteen sound alikes (with the punk influences, I know-I am making a hash of this). If this bothers you, more fun for me and the believers.
This band is a lot of fun and starting to get buzz like a beehive. I creep to the edge of where I think the pit will be, revel in my sobriety, and….
Band sounds great. Stage is too small for a lot of activity but the lead singer and bassist give it a go. Lead singer is covered in tats on his arms and across his upper chest. Punk stylings. But here is the thing. Smiley. Having fun. This isn’t Johnny Rotten trying to end rock ‘n roll. Or some pseudo-political blah blah wah wah just fun music that rocks. The band all knows their instruments, take care to put on a good show, and the lead singer shows a lot of personality. He opines that the only people who hate tater tots are “communists”, and kept saying “what is going on over there” when trying to break up a potential altercation in the crowd…because “as he gets older, he worries about people.”
Crowd was into it. A smallish pit that veered from fun to subdued to amateur hour fights. Lots of singing along and flashbulbs. These guys look like they are having a hell of a lot of fun. Even the roadies were laughing and hugging and enjoying the show. Crowd sang along to almost all the songs of the latest album The ’59 Sound . Couldn’t ask for more. About 18 song set. In the end – spin the album The ’59 Sound…if you like it, the show should be worth the time. Bet you sing along. Oh, and one thing is for sure: I will never get the opportunity see these guys for $15 in a small room again.
