The Thermals, Crystal Ballroom, Portland OR

September 10, 2010

Showdate : September 9th, 2010

Hell yes. The Thermals killed it last night. Absolutely slayed. I really feel like writing a mash note type review to The Thermals after that set last night. Most fun I’ve had at a show since. Well, last weekend. But that is my issue.

Setlist and all that:

Here’s Your Future
I Might Need You To Kill
??
I Don’t Believe You
We Were Sick
It’s Trivia
When We Were Fools
Never Listen To Me
Not Like Any Other Feeling
Power Lies
Returning To The Fold
Saint Rosa And The Swallows
Only For You
Your Love Is So Strong
I Called Out Your Name
When I Was Afraid
??
Now We Can See
Pillar Of Salt
——->Encore
My Name Is Jonas (Weezer Cover)
No Culture Icons

The Crystal is jammed.  I think The Thermals are a little amped for this one.  Westin Harris (drums) is slapping hands during set up, as do Hutch (guitar, vox) and Kathy (bass, vox) when they hit the stage.

I like how The Thermals absolutely destroy some The Body, The Blood, The Machine material before working in new stuff.  About 2/3 of the way through the fourth song “I Don’t Believe You” the sound on Hutch’s guitar (I think) goes to absolute shit.  Trashed the end of the song.  The band and venue cover it nicely and we quickly move on.

I don’t know if it was the sound hiccup or what, but the next 3 songs are absolutely rocked. Hutch on the ground in front of Kathy, jumping on the drum riser, Kathy leaning into her amp distorting her bass, and Westin going crazy.  Singing along to most songs as he bashes away.  So fun.

“Now We Can See” started with Westin slapping hands in the crowd (again) and doing vocals on Hutch’s mic before rushing back to his kit. I’m telling you…the whole show was fun.

During “A Pillar Of Salt” you can see people jumping and having fun a good 30 rows back. During “My Name Is Jonas”, a real mosh pit forms about 10 rows back. A crowd surfer was even spotted. Sinners.  The crowd energy for this show was great. The spring loaded  (or whatever it is) ballroom floor was like an earthquake baby during “No Culture Icons” and the crowd definitely gave enough love to merit the encore.

A cover of Weezer’s “My Name Is Jonas” was the first song of the encore.   The all ages pit was euphoric. You can get a taste from this Bend video.

Overall? Great, great show. Everyone was happy on the way out. Definitely the high point of night two of MFNW for me.
